The 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLS AMG Line Premium, tested in Selenite Grey, is a shining example of Mercedes’ ability to combine luxury, practicality, and performance in one elegant package. We took out a 1-month car subscription on this luxury beast and after covering 2,200 miles behind the wheel, we can confidently say that this is a car that truly impresses on every level—though it does come with one small caveat.
Striking Looks and Road Presence
In Selenite Grey, the GLS AMG Line Premium commands attention wherever it goes. Its bold grille, angular LED headlights, and AMG body styling give it a sporty yet sophisticated appearance. The 21-inch AMG alloy wheels and subtle chrome detailing elevate its premium feel, while the sheer size of the vehicle ensures it’s impossible to ignore. This is not a car for shrinking violets—it’s big, bold, and unapologetically luxurious.
Interior Excellence
Step inside, and the GLS delivers a cabin that feels more like a first-class lounge. The blend of premium materials—leather, brushed aluminium, and soft-touch plastics—oozes quality, while the ambient lighting adds a touch of personalisation and modern flair. The layout is both intuitive and visually stunning, with the 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster seamlessly integrated with the central touchscreen.
The seven-seat configuration is one of the GLS’s standout features. Unlike many SUVs where the third row feels like an afterthought, the GLS offers ample space for adults in the back. Even on long trips to the Cotswolds and Norfolk, there were no complaints from passengers in the rearmost seats. What’s more, the boot still provides impressive luggage capacity, even with all seven seats in use—a rarity in this segment.
Driving Comfort and Technology
On the road, the GLS excels as a long-distance cruiser. The suspension, particularly with the air suspension fitted as standard on this model, soaks up bumps effortlessly, making it supremely comfortable for both driver and passengers. Despite its size, it’s remarkably refined, with minimal road or wind noise intruding into the cabin.
The MBUX infotainment system is another highlight. The combination of voice control, touch inputs, and the touchpad means it’s incredibly user-friendly. Apple CarPlay integration worked flawlessly throughout our test, and the system’s responsiveness is a benchmark for the segment.
The massage seats in the front were a firm favourite, especially on longer journeys. My wife was particularly enamoured with their ability to transform a mundane drive into a spa-like experience. Meanwhile, the augmented reality navigation system proved invaluable for navigating unfamiliar routes, with clear and precise directions overlaid on the screen.
Performance and Fuel Economy
Under the bonnet, the GLS AMG Line Premium is powered by a mild-hybrid turbocharged six-cylinder engine that strikes a fine balance between performance and efficiency. It’s no slouch, with smooth acceleration and plenty of torque for overtaking. Despite its size, the GLS didn’t feel unwieldy on the motorway or during short runs around town.
Fuel economy was better than expected for a car of this size, thanks in part to the mild-hybrid system. Over our 2,200-mile test, which included a mix of long-distance cruising and shorter commutes, the GLS delivered respectable figures that didn’t leave us wincing at the pump.
The Only Drawback: Parking
The only real drawback we found during our time with the GLS was its size when it came to parking. While the 360-degree camera system and parking sensors are excellent, there’s no getting around the fact that this is a large car. Manoeuvring into tight spaces—especially in multi-storey car parks—required extra care and patience. For anyone frequently navigating urban environments, this is something to bear in mind.
Final Verdict
The 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLS AMG Line Premium is a near-perfect luxury SUV. It’s spacious, comfortable, and packed with features that make every journey a pleasure. Whether you’re taking the family on a road trip or simply commuting, it excels in every scenario. Yes, parking can be a challenge, but that’s a small price to pay for the sheer luxury and practicality it offers.
I think the other thing that is surprising that is missing from this trim level is the heated steering wheel, but with heated and cooled seats, heated cupholders and massage seats, we soon put up with cold hands.
If you’re in the market for a seven-seater SUV that doesn’t compromise on comfort, technology, or style, the GLS AMG Line Premium should be at the very top of your list.
